Spring is here, you can smell the sweet blossoms in the air, feel the dewy rain. The sense of rebirth is tangible. Nature is renewing herself and beginning to emerge after winter hibernation. Connect with this new cycle of rejuvenation, shed your winter skin and welcome in the return of the sun by syncing your inner flow with the rhythms of nature. Now is a time of creative potential and awakening.
Within an Ayurvedic perspective, Spring is heavy, sluggish Kapha time characterized by allergies, excess mucus, the feeling of being heavy and stagnant, leftover from our winter phase. We can bring this Kapha energy into balance and prepare ourselves for a vibrant Spring with an invigorating cleanse, inside and out.
1.) Clean your outer temple. Both our home and our bodies can get a little dusty. Now’s the time to put away anything you accumulated during the winter (extra sweaters, coats, blankets), declutter and wipe surfaces clean with lemongrass + eucalyptus oil diluted in water. Decluttering includes letting go of any habits you may have developed during the winter, from more inward, hibernating and lethargic tendencies to heavier, richer foods that won’t serve our Spring transformation. Open all the windows and doors, and moving clockwise, smudge your home with locally gathered sage.
2.) Clean your inner temple. Shift towards more bitter, light and drying foods. Look at what nature provides us now: fresh greens like dandelion, mustard, sprouts, chard, lemongrass. I like to start my day with a cup of warm water with a bit of local honey + raw apple cider vinegar or lemon. It flushes you out and stokes your digestive fire. If you are feeling particularly sluggish, try a week long kitchari cleanse. Add less ghee and more cilantro and bitter greens to your kitchari for Spring! Sip on burdock, ginger, licorice, black pepper tea.
3.) You can’t rush a blossom, take time to nourish so you can flourish this upcoming season. Self care practices are always a must, for this time of year do more invigorating practices such as a vigorous solar activating vinyasa class. Dry brush in circular motions first thing in the morning, starting from the extremities moving inward towards your heart center. This will shift your lymphatic system into detox mode, recirculating with fresh, vital energy. Follow up with a brisk abhyanga Ayurvedic oil massage with light oils (such as apricot, coconut and sweet almond), anoint with your favorite essential oils and spritz body with rose or jasmine water. If you are feeling extra congested, neti with warm salt water to clear out the sinuses.
4.) Go into nature, commune with the energy of Mother Earth and listen to her wisdom. How can your flow reflect natures cyclical intelligence? Spring Pranayama and Meditation in Nature: come into a comfortable seat, connecting with the earth beneath you. Take a few moments connecting with your breath and feeling state, then shift towards the heating breath of fire Kapalbhati to burn through any Winter stagnation. After 3 rounds pause in open awareness, hands in lotus mudra at heart center. Think back to any seed intentions you set during the Winter Solstice, what is ready to bud? What needs more time, patience, loving care and nutrients to grow? What has shifted? What new intentions spontaneously arise when you look within? For more clarity and clearing, give yourself the extra time to pause and retreat.
